Letters of Pliny the Younger

Pliny the Younger. (79 AD). Letters 6.16 and 6.20. (B. Radice, Trans.). Retrieved from: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~afutrell/404b/web%20rdgs/pliny%20on%20vesuvius.htm
These two letters are the only eyewitness account of the eruption of Vesuvius.  Pliny the Younger stayed behind when his uncle, Pliny the Elder, went to investigate the volcano and help a friend.  Unfortunately Pliny the Elder did not survive, but the Younger’s letters to Tacitus describing the event did.
